Salt air is hard on steel. Mild steel is the standard, cost-effective choice for most gate and framing work, but anything close to the coast will rust faster. Stainless steel costs more up front and holds up far better for handrails, balustrades and fittings exposed to sea air. Aluminium suits lighter gates that need to be easy to open.
